Frost Mage

Ranged DPS low demand

A safe, consistent DPS spec with strong survivability, great for leveling and PvP but weaker in raids.

How It Feels to Play

Frost Mage is the safe choice. You have a Water Elemental pet for extra damage, Ice Barrier to absorb incoming hits, and your spells slow enemies. You're incredibly hard to kill, which makes Frost the best Mage spec for leveling, solo content, and PvP.

In PvE raids, Frost is the weakest of the three Mage specs. Frostbolt spam is your main damage, and while it's consistent, it lacks the burst of Arcane and the scaling of Fire. There are no frost-based equivalents to Ignite or Arcane Blast stacking. Your damage is what it is: steady, reliable, but ultimately lower than what you'd do in another spec.

That said, Frost has niches. It's excellent for AoE farming with Blizzard and Frost Nova. In PvP, Frost Mages are nightmares, slowing, rooting, shattering, and kiting melee classes endlessly. And for new players, Frost's survivability makes it the most forgiving spec to learn the class.

Great for leveling, farming, and PvP, but the weakest Mage raid spec. Most guilds will ask you to respec Fire or Arcane for raids. You'll still get dungeon groups easily.

51 into Frost for Summon Water Elemental, 10 into Arcane for Arcane Concentration. Frostbolt is your primary spell; just keep casting it. Use Water Elemental on cooldown for extra DPS. Icy Veins is your haste cooldown. Cold Snap resets Water Elemental and Icy Veins. In PvP, use Frost Nova and Cone of Cold to control melee while you Frostbolt from range.

Spell hit cap is 16%. Elemental Precision gives 3% for Frost spells, so you need 164 rating (13%). Spell Damage scales Frostbolt directly. Crit is strong with Ice Shards (+100% crit damage for Frost spells). Haste speeds up Frostbolt casts.
