Beast Mastery Hunter
The top Hunter DPS spec in early TBC, leveraging a powerful pet and the devastating Bestial Wrath cooldown.
How It Feels to Play
Beast Mastery is the Hunter's powerhouse spec, and in early TBC, it's arguably one of the best DPS specs in the entire game. Your pet isn't just a companion; it's a significant chunk of your total damage. With Bestial Wrath (The Big Red Pet), your pet becomes an unstoppable killing machine for 18 seconds, and combined with your own cooldowns, the burst is absurd.
The rotation revolves around the steady shot weave: fitting Steady Shot between your auto-shots without clipping the auto-shot timer. It sounds simple, but doing it perfectly requires practice and a feel for your weapon's attack speed. Kill Command on cooldown, keep your pet alive and on target, and manage your mana. It's one of those 'easy to learn, hard to master' situations.
BM Hunters are in high demand in TBC raids, especially in Tier 4 and Tier 5 content where they often top damage meters. The spec falls off slightly in Sunwell as Survival becomes more competitive, but for the majority of TBC, BM is king. Your biggest challenge is keeping your pet alive on raid encounters with AoE damage, since a dead pet means a massive DPS loss.
Strengths
- Top-tier DPS in early and mid TBC
- Bestial Wrath provides enormous burst damage
- Relatively simple rotation with high output
Pain Points
- Pet dying is a catastrophic DPS loss
- Falls off in later tiers compared to Survival
- Many Hunters competing for the same raid spots
Demand & Supply
One of the top DPS specs in early TBC. Raids happily bring 3-4 BM Hunters. The problem is that Hunters are extremely popular, so there are many competing for those spots.
Talent Build
Standard BM DPS
41/20/041 points into Beast Mastery for The Beast Within, then 20 into Marksmanship for Aimed Shot and Mortal Shots (crit damage). Your pet is a huge portion of your DPS, so keep it alive and on the boss. The steady shot weave (Steady Shot between auto-shots) is your core rotation. Use Bestial Wrath on cooldown for burst phases.
Stat Priority
Hit cap is 9% (142 rating) against raid bosses. After that, Attack Power is your best scaling stat for BM since it benefits both you and your pet through Kill Command. Agility gives crit and Attack Power. Haste improves your steady shot weave.
